Kiln Drying
One of the many reasons we attract a lot of clients is because our wood is kiln dried. Kiln drying can be thought of as controlled air drying. Modern dry kilns allow tight control of air flow, temperature and humidity so that all the timber dries uniformly and to the precise moisture content required. We at Wood Products (K) Ltd have 5 large scale kiln driers and can dry 200 m3 at full capacity, the largest in East Africa.
Advantages of Kiln Drying
- 1) Kiln dried timber is harder and more durable due the moisture being removed.
- 2) Kiln drying prevents the timber from warping or bending.
- 3) Kiln-dried timber can be machined to a superior finish than air-dried timber and therefore problems such as raised grain are virtually eliminated.
- 4) Kiln dried timber is ready for finishing immediately with a paint or stain which means that the wood can be protected without delay.
- 5) Kiln dried timber acclimatizes to site conditions faster, so the timber can adapt to the weather of the site location.

Kiln drying reduces the moisture content of wood before it can be used. Heated air is circulated and the temperature is carefully controlled for the purpose of reaching the wood’s equilibrium moisture content: a balance between the moisture content of the wood, and the relative humidity of its surrounding environment, depending upon the end wood products application specifications.
The benefit of kiln drying the timber is that it is dried in a controlled environment, has rigorous testing, and provides a higher quality end product. Bugs and insects are also killed during the drying process. The dried timber is less likely to have distortions, staining, cracks and warping and is more likely to become more durable and naturally enhanced.
